Wedding Ceremony Program
Pranav & Kowshika
✦ ✦ ✦
I
Ganesha Pooja
All auspicious events in the Hindu tradition begin with an invocation to Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles.
II
Punyahavachanam
A purification ritual performed by invoking Vedic mantras with a kalasam (pot of sanctified water) to purify the mind and space. The five elements — earth, water, fire, air, and space — are invited to bear witness to the marriage.
III
Welcoming the Groom
Kowshika's family greet and welcome Pranav and his family to begin the wedding ceremony.
IV
Arrival of the Bride
Kowshika enters the mandap (wedding altar) accompanied by her family.
V
Kankana Dharanam
To invoke the blessings of Lord Shiva, a sacred thread dipped in turmeric water is tied around the wrists of Pranav and Kowshika to ward off evil.
VI
Paadha Pooja
Pranav and Kowshika express their love, respect, and gratitude to their parents by washing their feet and applying sandalwood paste and kungumam (vermilion).
VII
Mulaipari Pooja
Pranav and Kowshika pray before nine different grains sprouted in clay pots, representing fertility, prosperity, and abundance in their married life.
VIII
Kanyadhaanam
Kowshika's parents entrust their greatest treasure to Pranav and his family. With their blessings, they ask Pranav to accept Kowshika as his equal partner and to love, respect, and protect her forever.
IX
Maangalya Dharanam
The priest invokes the holy fire, Agni, as the divine witness to the wedding. The Mangalyam — a sacred chain with a holy pendant symbolizing the couple's love and sacred union — is tied around Kowshika's neck by Pranav with three knots. He then applies kungumam to Kowshika's hair parting, signifying his lifelong commitment to her.
X
Maalai Matruthal
The couple exchanges garlands three times to show their acceptance of one another and their union as two bodies with one soul.
XI
Agni Pradakshanam & Saptapadi
Pranav and Kowshika walk around the holy fire and take seven steps together — Saptapadi — signifying the seven marital vows:
1To nourish and protect each other.
2To develop and maintain physical, mental, and spiritual strength.
3To prosper in a virtuous manner.
4To ensure happiness and harmony through mutual love.
5To raise compassionate and respectful children.
6To attain self-control, good health, and a long life.
7To remain best friends and eternal partners.
XII
Kai Korvai Arasi
Kowshika's brother, Dharun, holds Pranav's hands in a plate of rice, reflecting his continued support for his sister and nourishing the bond between families. The Mangala Vaalthu — a benediction song from the Kongu region of Tamil Nadu — is recited during this time.
XIII
Ammi Mithithal & Arundhathi Paarthal
Pranav supports Kowshika as she places her right foot on a grinding stone, Ammi, symbolizing the strength, stability, and resilience needed to face life's challenges together. The priest then guides the couple outside to view the twin stars Vasishtha and Arundhati, embodying marital devotion, loyalty, and fulfillment.
XIV
Aashirvaatham
The priest recites prayers to bless the newlyweds. Pranav and Kowshika seek blessings from their parents, teachers, family, and friends for good fortune, prosperity, and a long life together.
XV
Mangalam Aarati
To conclude the ceremony, women from both families circle a mixture of lime and turmeric water around the couple three times to ward off evil — a final prayer seeking God's grace, protection, and blessings for the couple's life together.
